My Last Meal

Recently I've stumbled upon a series of YouTube videos where guests on the show get to eat their chosen last meal that they requested. After watching a couple episodes, that got me thinking what would I eat for my last meal before I bit the dust? Would I want something new or something I have all the time? Would I do a mix of cuisines or just stick to one? Breakfast, Lunch or Dinner? As I thought about my hypothetical last meal longer and longer the more questions I had and the more indecisive I got. However, people on death row don't get all the time in the world to decide what they want, so after careful deliberation I've decided what my last meal would be. A majority of people when asked what their last meal would be end up with five courses with twenty different dishes, I think this approach is flawed because in my opinion you don't want your last meal to leave you way too stuffed and feeling terrible. Instead you want a five maybe six dishes max.

First Course: Tuna and Salmon Sashimi

For my first course I choose Tuna and Salmon Sashimi. I choose this dish as my first dish because I love the simplicity of it and it holds a lot of sentimental value. This dish reminds me of Hong Kong because almost every Friday I would go out with my friends to our favorite all you could eat sushi spot. This sushi spot you paid by the plate so by the end of the night we would huge stacks of plates at our table which the waitress would count then bring us our bill. Now every time I have sashimi especially tuna and salmon I'm reminded of those nights at the cheap all you could sushi spot with my friends.

Main Course: Striploin Steak, Fries and a Caesar Salad

My main course was always going to be some big cut of meat and some assortment of side dishes. I think there is something archaic deep in my brain that just finds steak so comforting. There is also something to be said about the simplicity of the dish and how universal it is. To accompany my steak I can think of no better thing than French fries. French fries have become a staple in so many different cultures. Finally rounding it all out I would want a Caesar Salad. A Caesar Salad is perfect it has just enough lettuce and greens to be called a salad yet its loaded with croutons, cheese, and all the other accoutrements. This for me would be the perfect meal that I'd be happy to be my last meal.

Dessert: Mom's Carrot Cake

To top off my final meal I would want a slice of my Mother's Carrot Cake. I've had this same cake for my birthday since I was at least ten. To me it is the perfect dessert, a nice mix of soft cake and rich frosting. Eating this cake always reminds me of either birthdays of Christmas because that is the only time my mom makes it. It might not be the best dessert ever or be my all-time favorite dessert but it holds a special place thus I think this would be the dessert of my choosing for my final meal.

While this may be what I would choose for my last meal in this moment who knows what I'd choose five or ten years from now. Also there are so many other dishes I love which are arguably better choices, but at the end of the day you can't have everything for your last meal. My last meal might not be perfect, but I think it would give me the most joy possible before my demise. Finally, I almost forgot to accompany my last meal I probably would want a cold beer to drink along with my meal.

What would your last meal be?

  1. I love the pay by plate system in Asia. It's sneaky on the wallet but fun while you're there. Straight sashimi and steak are great choices for a final meal. I'm more of a disgusting fast food kinda guy, so I'd probably through some In-n-Out into the mix, but overall a solid choice. What's your beer of choice?

  2. I think all your choices for your last meal is great (I've never tried steak with fries so I will have to do that one day). Your post definitely made me think a lot about what I would eat for my last meal-- think I would have to do something noodle related!

  3. Your combination of sushi followed by steak and fries sounds delicious. This would definitely give me some peace and happiness before being leaving the Earth. I would have to add some Korean food into my last meal.

  4. I love these choices! I think you have a nice balance going on here. I also really like sashimi and steak. The surf and turf combo really works in my opinion! As for dessert, I have never really tried carrot cake but you make it sound appetizing. Maybe I will try it out! I think for me my classic dessert choice would be ice cream.

  5. This was a great read that really got me thinking. I have now realized that I have absolutely no idea what I would ask for as a last meal. I spent quite a while thinking about and honestly it's to hard to decide I feel like I would want to eat a little bit of everything before I go. The easier question would be what I would not want to eat as a last meal.

  6. Good last meal choice! I’m not entirely sure what I would want for my last meal, but for sure some vodka sauce pasta and a nice drink. Also carrot cake is superior, my dad loves it and I usually bake him a carrot cake for his birthday.

  7. Every time I meet someone new I like to ask them this question. I feel like it's so insightful to their personality. I think you picked a pretty solid selection. I love carrot cake too and your mom's carrot cake sounds like it would be delicious.

  8. I love how this post made me consider what my last meal might be! I feel like I would be way too indecisive, aside from a pastrami sandwich. Also, carrot cake is the best!

  9. Such a creative post idea! I love the variety you have... I do think is too hard to just choose one or two items. I think I would have to agree with steak and fries. But since you mentioned breakfast in your intro, I'm tempted to throw some waffles or pancakes in there too.
